POSITION: Seasonal Technician – Vegetation Assessments
LOCATION: Southern Illinois
SUMMARY
The Seasonal Technician – Vegetation Assessments will be responsible for conducting vegetation assessments at defined locations on rights-of-way in southern Illinois, completing assessment forms and entering data. This position will be responsible for accurate data collection and entry and take measures to ensure quality control. Assessments will be conducted from June 1 through August 15, 2023.
This position may have the opportunity to assist other Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever staff in planning and conducting habitat management on private lands, coordination outreach events or attending chapter sponsored events.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Complete Rights-of-way assessments during the defined time period.
- Identify vegetation types present in the rights-of-way.
- Accurately complete assessments forms and enter data by assigned deadlines.
- Interact with private landowners, staff, industry personnel, and others as needed in a positive manner.
- Represent Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous field experience that includes: adhering to field data collection protocols, and accurately collecting and recording field data
- Experience using hand-held GPS equipment for navigation and/or data collection.
- Ability to identify vegetation of southern Illinois.
- Valid Driver’s License
- Ability to work in adverse weather conditions over rough terrain.
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree or coursework and experience in biology, botany, ecology, or related field
- Experience in conducting vegetation surveys preferred.
CONFIDENTIALITY REQUIREMENTS:
- This position requires the individual to have access to confidential records and information. To successfully perform this position, confidentiality of the information with which the individual has contact must be maintained.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have the ability to use personal vehicle for work, mileage reimbursed.
- Must be able to operate a computer, iPad, and telephone.
- Must be able to read, interpret, and understand written and verbal information.
- Must be in good physical condition, able stand or walk for up to 6 hours per day over uneven terrain.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Monitoring will be conducted in locations where temperatures and conditions can be extreme.
- Biting insects, ticks, and contact with hazardous plant materials are possible.
- Work from a home office with daily travel to complete assessments.
- Overnight travel may be required at times to more efficiently complete assessments or attend trainings.

Salary: $18/hour, 32-40 hours per week plus $500/month housing stipend.
