Location: Coweeta Hydrologic Laboratory, Otto, North Carolina
Duration: Up to 3 years, annual term renewable based on performance
Start Date: The position is open until filled, with a target start by the end of August 2017.
Duties: The incumbent will participate in a team-oriented hydrological modeling project focused on
quantifying the role USDA National Forest System lands play in providing surface drinking water to
communities and populations across the conterminous United States (CONUS), and how National Forest System, State, and County Forest lands in Minnesota contribute to water supplies. Duties include, but are not limited to: 1) Operating, evaluating, and modifying large-scale hydrologic models; 2) Performing geospatial analysis in a Geographic Information System (GIS) on a variety of vector and raster data; 3) Constructing databases of water use information; and 4) Developing project products including maps, reports, scientific journal articles, and presentations to stakeholders and the scientific community. The incumbent will be responsible for supervising and working with a GIS technician on the project.
Qualifications: This position requires an advanced degree (MS minimum, PhD preferred) in hydrology, forest watershed science, physical geography, or a closely related field. In addition, experience with software for geospatial analysis (e.g., ArcGIS) and programming (e.g., Python, Matlab, R, FORTRAN) are required. Desired experience includes hydrological data synthesis, watershed hydrologic modeling (e.g., HSPF, PRMS, TopModel, MIKE SHE), and communicating science through peer-reviewed publications and public speaking. Experience supervising students or technicians is desired but not required.
