The Department of Natural Resources excels at protecting and managing Wisconsin’s natural resources while supporting the economy and the well-being of the citizenry. Within DNR, the Division of Forestry works in partnership to administer programs that protect and sustain our forested lands throughout the state, combining technical and financial assistance, planning, research, technology, education, and policy to help meet the many demands on the forest both today and for many years to come.
To help achieve our mission, we are seeking enthusiastic and hard-working candidates to fill current and future Forestry Technician positions statewide. Position Summary:
The Forestry Technician is responsible for technical, administrative and paraprofessional fire management activities (e.g. fire suppression, pre-suppression and prevention) serving as a certified forest fire equipment operator, operating specialized/complex forest fire control equipment including tractor/plows and engines; issuing permits; implementing forest fire prevent projects; and assisting in performing fire inspections. These positions are designated as a primary equipment operator for the dispatch area.
Forestry Technicians also provide technical, administrative, and paraprofessional forest management assistance on state, private or county lands when not assigned to fire duties. Forest management responsibilities may include forest reconnaissance, management plans, timber sale establishment and administration, timber stand improvement, reforestation and afforestation, forest road development and maintenance, and property management on federal lands, state lands, county lands and private forest lands.
Forestry Technician positions are key to public safety and security and require the incumbent to meet and maintain the physical fitness test standards required for all DNR protective positions. The principal duties of the position require active fire suppression duties which require frequent exposure to a high degree of danger or peril and also require a high degree of physical conditioning. This position is available for fire suppression, pre-suppression and prevention duties year-round.

Successful candidates must pass a criminal background check prior to hire.
Candidates must also meet medical and physical fitness standards. Complete details on requirements and testing procedures will be mailed to candidates who are invited to interview.
All candidates must meet the requirements to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License within 6 months. In addition, certifications related to firefighting and equipment operation must be attained within one to five years.
Due to fireline responsibilities, candidates hired into these positions must be able to respond within 30 minutes to the work station and travel independently. Specific work stations are not yet determined and will be communicated later in the hiring process.
Qualifications:
Applicants must possess the following required qualifications to be at least minimally qualified for this position:
• Training or experience* related to any type of fire suppression, including structural
or wildland fire; and
• Field experience* performing a combination of field forestry practices, such as:
Forestry data collection,
Forest regeneration assessment,
Silviculture (i.e., science-based forest management practices),
Timber marking and sale establishment,
Using GPS or GIS,
Tree identification, and/or
Using maps and identifying legal descriptions
* NOTE: Experience may be gained through an academic training course or camp;
internship; temporary summer employment; volunteer opportunity; or full-time/on-going
employment.
Best-qualified candidates will also possess the following preferred qualifications:
• Wildland fire qualification/certification
• Experience operating equipment such as tractors, dozers, skidsteers, or forklift
• Commercial Driver’s License (Class A)
• Experience operating and maintaining small engines, such as snow blowers,
pumps, lawnmowers, or chainsaws
• Heavy equipment maintenance, such as replacing hydraulic lines, greasing, track
adjustments, checking fluid levels, or changing implements
• Field experience performing the full array of field forestry practices listed above,
preferably gained through full-time/on-going employment
• Coursework related to forest management
