Assitant Waterbird Ecologist (Forbes Biological Station)

$47,500-$49,000 (depending on experience)
Job Description:
The successful candidate will conduct research and monitoring activities in the field of
wetland bird (e.g., waterfowl, other waterbirds, shorebirds, passerines, etc.), wetlands ecology, or other related natural resource fields as needed to address the goals and objectives of the Prairie Research Institute, the Illinois Natural History Survey and the Forbes Biological Station.
Job Duties:
Independently conduct complex research and monitoring activities in the field of wetland or other waterbirds, shorebirds, passerines, etc. Independently conduct complex research and monitoring activities with wetlands ecology and other natural resource field-related projects. Conduct field and laboratory work which may require extensive travel for long periods during atypical business
hours. Prepare reports and support publishable manuscripts, technical reports, internal publications or presentations for professional meetings. Collect, manage, and analyze scientific data. Communicate and interact with recipients of services and provide technical assistance as required. Apply basic and specialized knowledge in a specialized research area and keep abreast of developments in the discipline. Provide outreach and service to the public, the INHS, the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, PRI, UIUC, and professional organizations as requested and approved by supervisor. Coordinate, instruct, supervise, or train hourly staff and students. Maintain high degree of scientific integrity and a positive attitude. As time and contract(s) permit, report findings in scientific journals and at professional meetings; provide technical information in area of
expertise; and make presentations to service, nature or science groups, schools, or other public meetings.
Qualifications:
Required – Minimum: A Bachelors of Science degree in natural resource management, wildlife
biology, ecology or related field with 1 year of experience in research relating to wetland birds. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Experience identifying birds, plants, and invertebrates is required. Experience using common software packages for data recording and analysis, reporting, and processing, such as ArcGIS, GPS, and other mapping software; and this position requires experience and training in wildlife, specifically waterfowl, waterbirds, and/or wetlands ecology. Experience working with boats and firearms. Must be able to swim and work in extreme weather conditions. Must possess strong interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively with
other scientists, researchers, and staff; appropriate field and laboratory skills, as well as physical skills necessary to carry out field work. Effective communication, organizational, personal relations, and leadership skills for the purpose of supervising, planning and monitoring research activities, and documenting progress. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively with a professional demeanor both as a team member/leader and independently, with minimal supervision, in a fast-paced work environment with multiple and changing priorities.
