blog posts Wildlife Biologist Assistant at Ted Shanks Conservation Area (Ashburn) Oct 18, 2017 3:45 pm by Dana JohnsonJobs Share on Facebook Tweet Email Images Wildlife Biologist Assistant at Ted Shanks Conservation Area (Ashburn) Full-Time Salary: $28,596-$50,280 Job Description/Duties: Under the direction of a Wildlife Biologist, plans, supervises, and implements wildlife management programs on state owned conservation areas, and leased or licensed lands including equipment operation to conduct, prescribed burning, food plot planting, waterfowl management program, plant and animal monitoring, control of invasive/ exotic species, natural community restoration/management, tree and shrub plantings, wildlife surveys and management/evaluation projects, public use management, and vegetation management. Assist with maintaining hunter harvest, land management and inventory databases. Assists with the development of a district budget and monitors expenditures including bidding for goods and services and contract administration. Assists with preparation and oversight of cash rent Ag. Contracts to accomplish area management and maintenance activities including the use of bartering. Plans seasonal and monthly work schedules. Tracks accomplishments and assists with vehicle and fuel reconciliation reports. Prepares and presents educational programs and provides public contact to area and resource users through managed hunts, day-to-day operations, workshops and other special events. Provides technical assistance to private landowners and assists with workshops promoting wildlife management. Records, compiles and analyzes information using portable data recorders, personal computers, ArcGIS and other software. Participates in Leadership Academy and other professional development programs. Performs other duties as required. EOE Required Qualifications: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor's Degree in Conservation Biology, Ecology, Wildlife Management; or a closely related natural resources degree. This is a training position. Selected candidate will be expected to be promoted or moved at the discretion of the Wildlife Division to meet Division goals and needs. Special Ability Requirements: Operate a motor vehicle and obtain a valid Driver License by date of employment. Observe and classify trees, common plants and insects and diseases. Read and interpret topographic and soil survey maps and aerial photos. Read and write land descriptions using latitudes and longitudes, GPS data, and standard legal descriptions (Township, Range, Section), and to locate specific points, areas and features on topographic maps and on the ground. Travel periodically throughout the state during the work week and occasionally for out-of-state training (approved travel expenses are reimbursed by the Department). Work with and maintain effective working relationships with the Natural Resources Conservation Service, Farm Services Agency, Department field staff, Extension Agents, private landowners, FFA instructors, community leaders, teachers, etc. Work out-of-doors in extreme hot or cold temperatures, and with biting insects. Walk in rough terrain including shallow flooded wetlands and mud and participating in prescribed burns or wild fires. Must have good technical and general writing skills. Must have good verbal communication skills. Must have the ability to prepare and present general information and technical programs to diverse professional and lay audiences.
