Ph.D. Research Assistantship, Kansas State University
Full-Time
Salary: $24,000/yr plus tuition
Job Description: The Department of Horticulture and Natural Resources at Kansas State University is recruiting a Ph.D. student to investigate how landscape composition and management affect population demographics of muskrats. The prospective student will use occupancy surveys and live trapping to assess how muskrat habitat use and abundance is influenced by the spatial distribution and quality of both wetland and matrix habitats. Additional opportunities may include experimental movement studies to understand how landscape management (e.g., prescribed fire, woody encroachment) affects muskrat movement choices during dispersal. Field work will begin during the Summer 2018 semester. The student will be supported by a 12-month graduate research assistantship for 4 years and may have the opportunity to teach undergraduate skills courses relative to recreational hunting and the outdoor industry. Thus, the prospective student must be proficient with firearms and appreciate the culture of recreational hunting.
Job Qualifications: Prospective students should have a M.S. degree in wildlife or landscape ecology, good leadership and organizational skills, experience with GIS and occupancy modeling, experience with live-trapping and handling mammals, and excellent communication skills.
