Description:
The Office of Applied Science within the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is hiring a Waterfowl Assistant Field Research Scientist to begin work on April 1, 2019. This is a dual appointment Limited Term Employee position, and funding is available for at least two years. The Waterfowl Assistant Field Research Scientist will work directly with the Waterfowl and Migratory Game Bird Research Scientist to coordinate and implement research logistics. Immediate work will involve research on breeding ecology of Ring-necked ducks in northern Wisconsin. The Waterfowl Assistant Field Research Scientist will manage day to day operations of nest searching and brood monitoring with the help of seasonal technicians. The position will be based out of Rhinelander, Wisconsin.
Qualifications:
Required- Selected applicants must have a knowledge of waterfowl breeding ecology and be able to demonstrate past competency conducting waterfowl breeding ecology field work in remote environments. Methodological attentiveness such as detailed data collection and consistent implementation of protocol are required. Applicants must be comfortable traversing difficult terrain to search wetlands that may require the use of chest waders and / or canoe. Additionally, applicants must maintain a persistent working attitude, and work well both independently as well as with others. Applicants must be able to effectively lead and manage seasonal technicians. Experience exporting and importing spatial data using ArcGIS is required. Applicants must be able to consistently lift loads of 50 lbs. and have a valid driver’s license.
Preferred- Preferred applicants will have prior experience capturing waterfowl during the breeding season. Applicants who possess strong leadership capabilities and are familiar with northern Great Lakes ecosystems, such as hemiboreal forests, bogs, and fens are highly desired.
