Position Description:
The Wisconsin Cooperative Fishery Research Unit at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point is seeking 3 fisheries research technicians who will provide support for collaborative research efforts among WICFRU, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, and the Center for Limnology at UW-Madison. Specifically, successful candidates will assist WICFRU research scientists and graduate students on projects evaluating: 1) muskellunge movements and habitat use on Green Bay; 2) food web interactions among walleyes, lake whitefish, and yellow perch on Green Bay; 3) muskellunge abundance, growth, and mortality in northern Wisconsin lakes; and 4) the influence of large-scale centrarchid removals on walleye recruitment in northern Wisconsin lakes. Work duties will include fyke net, gill net, and electrofishing surveys, assisting with tagging and tracking of fish, processing of calcified structures and diet samples, maintaining boats, motors, and other field equipment, and contributing to the preparation of manuscripts submitted for journal publication. Duties will require extensive field work that may occur during poor weather conditions (cold and wet) and extended travel with overnight stays.
Qualifications:
- S. in Fisheries or closely related field
- Experience with fyke nets, gill nets, or electrofishing
- Experience operating and maintaining boats, motors, and field equipment
- A satisfactory driving record as defined by UW-Stevens Point Transportation Services policy 6.1-6.3 (an unsatisfactory record includes, but is not limited to three or more moving violations and/or at-fault accidents in the past two years, an Operation While Intoxicated (OWI)/Driving Under the Influence (DUI) citation within 12 months, or suspension or revocation of driver’s license)
- Familiarity with R or SAS programming language (preferred)
Start Date: preferably April 15, 2019, but latest would be May 1st
Terms of Employment: $13/hour, 40 hr per week, six-month appointment
