Forest Soils PhD Student, Oregon State University
We are searching for a PhD student to study soil carbon in disturbed ecosystems. This project will take advantage of soil sample and data archives from previously installed LTSP studies across the world (I’m also in search of more samples, too!). This position will perform a series of organic geochemical analyses on soils to determine the mechanisms of resilience, or lack-thereof, to extreme organic matter removals that occur during disturbances like harvesting and forest fires. The student will be required to interface with colleagues and research sites around North America and New Zealand, so the ability and willingness for international travel is necessary.
This position is funded for three years and includes a stipend, health benefits, and funding for travel to national conferences. The student will also be expected to be involved in other projects within the research group and department, thereby providing them with a broad range of experience and opportunities to collaborate.
Strong applicants will hold, or be graduating soon with, an MS degree and show an interest in forest soils, organic geochemistry, and good written and oral communication skills.
