Description of Duties/Essential Functions:
Under administrative direction of the Section Administrator, plans, manages, executes, controls and evaluates the statewide Natural Areas Programs; provides major assistance in the formulation of policies and management, natural areas preservation and natural areas stewardship; administers program budget, monitors grant monies and allocates program resources; reviews and recommends legislation and administrative orders; consults with the Section Administrator and Division Chief in the planning, coordinating and implementation of cooperative programs; researches, compiles, prepares/present technical reports and papers; serves as liaison with other State, Federal and local agencies, organization and the general public.
Minimum Requirements:
Requires knowledge, skill and mental development equivalent to completion of a bachelor's degree in fish, wildlife, forestry or in natural heritage resource management or in a related biological science. Requires six years progressively responsible professional experience in natural heritage resource protection and management, encompassing natural areas management and stewardship. Requires thorough knowledge of theory, principles and practices associated with restoring and maintaining the three levels of biological diversity - ecosystems, species and genetics. Requires thorough knowledge of state and federal laws, rules and regulations as the apply to natural lands preservation and protection and consultation on public work projects. Requires a thorough knowledge of the flora and fauna of Illinois. Requires the ability to recognize the different ecological communities of Illinois and their component parts. Requires working knowledge of preserve design to identify sustainable land acquisition targets. Requires working knowledge of legal descriptions and easements necessary for the review and development of protection proposals. Requires working knowlege of statistical principles and procedures, including methods of frequency series, data, simple correlation methords, sampling techniques, and constuction/use of index numbers. Requires the ability to collect information, assist in analyzing and evaluating technical data and reports, prepare and maintain records and written narrative reports. Requires the ability to traverse rugged terrain carrying up to 30 pounds in inclement weather in the presence of bothersome insects, inverts, poisonous plants and animals, Requires ability to use GIS, topographic maps, aerial photographs, GPS units, and other maps and tools to create species maps and determine exact location of project areas, habitat types, and associates landforms. Requires extensive knowledge of public relation principles and techniques, audio/visual and other interpretive methods, theories and practices. Requires the ability to establish and maintain satisfactory relationships with representatives from federal, state and local governments, conservation and scientific organizations and other Natural Resource employees and the general public. Requires the ability to deliver planner and impromptu informational presentations.

Work Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30am to 4:30 pm, 1/2 hour lunch, Saturday & Sunday off
