Description:
Under direct supervision of the Water Quality Standards Unit Manager, Great Lakes Program and Standards Development, Bureau of Water, learns to function as a staff member in a program engaged in the execution of highly technical, scientific, sensitive and unique activities related to water quality standards issues. Learn to develop aquatic life, wildlife and human health toxicity-based water quality standards and criteria and assist in the implementation of these standards and criteria in National Pollution Discharge and Elimination System (NPDES) permits. Learn to locate pertinent studies from global literature regarding surface water toxicity-based standards and maintain a highly technical database dedicated to the purpose of supplying toxicological information for standards and criteria development. Confers with Agency staff in drawing conclusions regarding the approval or denial of permits, variances, adjusted standards and development of new or revised pollution standards.
Minimum Requirements:
Education and Experience: Requires a bachelor's degree in some field of the life sciences.
Special Skills: Requires a bachelor's degree in chemistry, limnology, ecology, or biology with course work in environmental toxicology.
Specific Job Requirements: Must be able to apply methodologies and regulations pertaining to aquatic life, wildlife, and human health toxicity-based standards. Will be required to locate sites on topographic maps.
Desirable Attributes: Course work or job experience in aquatic ecosystem assessment and toxicology and familiarity with toxics programs, including risk management, whole effluent toxicity testing, human health toxicity of water borne chemicals and aquatic life toxicity data.
