Job description:
The Wetlands Initiative is hiring a full-time restoration specialist to work with our team to conduct year-round prairie and wetland restoration at the 3,000-acre Dixon Waterfowl Refuge in Hennepin, Illinois. Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include:
- Managing invasive plant species
- Planting plugs and seed of native plant species
- Assisting with prescribed burns
- Other tasks associated with landscape restoration and management
Preferred Qualifications:
- Some experience in one or more of the following fields: biology, environmental science, natural resource management, botany, ecology
- Familiarity with or a desire to learn more about ecological restoration
- Interest in Illinois native plants, including basic plant identification skills
- Herbicide applicator license or ability to pass the Illinois Pesticide Applicator exam within four weeks of starting
- Prescribed burn certification, or ability to obtain certification by fall of 2019
- Reasonably good physical condition, with the ability to lift and carry up to 30 lbs.
- Ability to work outside under adverse weather conditions
- Ability to use power tools, including weed whackers, power augers, and/or chainsaws following completion of appropriate training
- Good attitude and willingness to be a team player
