The environmental specialist - safety sensitive performs routine entry-level activities in regard to assisting the environmental studies unit in an effort to comply with environmental regulations. Responsibilities are performed under direct supervision.

Responsibilities - What you’ll do
- Evaluates projects for environmental impacts and compliance with state and federal regulations and organizational guidelines; presents information to department staff through frequent and regular communications; makes recommendations regarding the need to avoid or minimize environmental impacts or develop compensatory mitigation plans; trains MoDOT District staff on stream, wetland, and endangered species regulations.
- Prepares, edits, and reviews internal reports, correspondence, and graphic materials as it relates to environmental regulations, requirements, or other environmental issues; including follow up on permit requests as assigned.
- Obtains detailed information from environmental staff and district personnel to develop, write and edit technical reports in accordance with department policies and practices for approval by the Federal Highway Administration and other agencies.
- Assists with field investigations and analysis regarding biological evaluations, habitat assessments for rare species (including bats, sensitive aquatic species, plants, pollinators, etc.), migratory bird nesting, wetland delineations, and storm water best management practices.
- Research topics concerning federal or state legislation, regulatory agency guidance, and performs literature or computer searches on various environmental topics; may conduct evaluation of projects impacts on wildlife-vehicle collisions and habitat connectivity; provides technical assistance in understanding and complying with state, federal, and organizational environmental standards, and regulations, and participates on project core teams.
Qualifications - All you need for success
- Bachelor's Degree: Social, Environmental, or Natural Resource Science, or related field
Special Working Conditions:
- After an initial six-month probationary period, a hybrid telework option may be considered.
- Substitution of education for experience may be allowed.
- Substitution of experience for education may be allowed.
- Job requires regular, statewide, or out-of-state, overnight travel.
- Job requires exposure to moderately adverse and undesirable environmental conditions.
- Job may require operation of vehicles to plow snow and spread ice control materials.
