  Description

  By joining our Division of Environmental Analysis, Ecology and Permitting Branch as a/an Environmental Scientist I in Franklin County, you’ll have the opportunity coordinates with state and federal agencies to secure Clean Water Act permits necessary for KYTC projects to reach construction.
  
  Holders of the Environmental Scientist I position will complete tasks such as:

  • Assess projects for potential impacts to streams and wetlands.
  • Communicate with KYTC Districts about their needs in regards to permitting and compliance.
  • Oversee consultants who are tasked with working on clearing KYTC projects and securing all necessary permits prior to construction.
  • Meet with state and federal resource agencies to help secure Clean Water Act permits for KYTC.

  Holders of this job will obtain the following skills:

  • Identify and classify Waters of the US according to the most recent regulations
  • Review and submit CWA permits on behalf of KYTC.
  • Update internal databases at KYTC to help keep project teams informed on your progress and milestones.

  Desired candidates possess the following requisite skills or experience applicable to the position:

  • Graduate of a college or University with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science.
  • No direct experience required for this position.
  • Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering or related area will substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.

  Work is typically performed in an office setting. Incumbents in this class may perform work in the field with frequent travel on a statewide basis. An incumbent in this position may be subject to adverse weather conditions, exposure to snake and insect bites, water-borne pathogens, broken glass, and rusty metal in streams. Electrocution from electro-fishing equipment is possible.
  
  Upon appointment, employees in this class will be required to maintain a valid driver's license and required to drive a licensed vehicle.

  Education:  Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree in a natural, biological or physical science OR Graduate of a college or university with a bachelor's degree including or supplemented by 20 semester hours in a natural, biological or physical science.

  Substitute EXPERIENCE for EDUCATION:  Experience in natural resources, environmental control, engineering or a related area will substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis.

  Probationary period:  This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
