The Specialist will be a people person and will spend much of their time in on-farm visits with farmers and landowners to persuade them to adopt agricultural practices such as no till, cover crops, nutrient management planning, integrated pest management, and regenerative practices. The Specialist will establish rapport with agronomists, ag consultants, and ag retailers to stay up to date on a variety of subjects related to soil health and regenerative agriculture.PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIESEstablish and maintain working relationships with Knox County’s farmers and landowners.Create and coordinate farmer peer groups. Develop and manage field/plot trials.Provide information on agronomic and machinery issues as they relate to soil health.Plan and coordinate field days and education events.Work with SWCD staff and partners to manage grants and cost-share programs.Other related duties as assigned.POSITION REQUIREMENTSBachelor’s Degree or equivalent experience in agronomy, agriculture, soil science, or a natural resources field such as biology or environmental science;Hands-on experience and working knowledge of agriculture and soil health;Good communication skills; Good organizational skills and the ability to prioritize a variable work load;A self-starter with a good work ethic;Professional appearance and comportment;A valid driver’s license.SALARY AND BENEFITSThe salary range is $45,000 - $75,000. Salary offers will be commensurate with experience. Benefits include health insurance, paid holidays / vacation / sick leave, and pension.SUPERVISORY RELATIONSHIPSThis position reports to the Knox County SWCD Board. Decisions regarding salary and other compensation, disciplinary actions, and termination of employment are made by the Knox County SWCD Board.Paid holidays, vacation leave, sick leave, leave of absence, and employee conduct will follow the Knox County Personnel Policies Handbook.The incumbent is considered an employee of Knox County.EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCEThe incumbent will be subject to a one-year probation period. The Board will perform a quarterly performance evaluation during the probationary period and annually thereafter.Performance shall be measured against duties set forth in this job description and the manner in which the duties are performed.The Knox County SWCD Board may review and update the job description with input from the incumbent.
