Job Description
The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking a river research technician to conduct fish surveys and assist in a telemetry project in the Mackinaw and Vermilion rivers.
River research technicians will work on a crew of 2 – 3 people assisting Stream Ecologists with field surveys. Field responsibilities include conducting fish surveys in wadeable and non-wadeable rivers and assisting with surgeries and tracking for a Smallmouth Bass telemetry study. When not in the field, research technicians conduct laboratory work including data entry, aging fish, and assistance with current research projects. Work hours will vary each day, but the successful applicant(s) would work approximately 40 hours per week.
The position will be stationed in Champaign Illinois, but travel will occur throughout the state. Workdays can be long, but mostly involve traveling to field sites. The successful applicant will work in scenic Illinois rivers, collect field data, and be able to assist with ongoing research projects. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in stream and river ecology research.
Qualifications
Must have or be working towards a bachelor’s degree in ecology, biology, fisheries, or natural resources. Valid driver’s license. Ability to carry heavy loads (40+lbs) over uneven terrain. Ability to work long hours (12+ hrs). Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions (heat, humidity, biting insects, etc.). Ability to swim. Demonstrated organizational skills and high attention to detail. Ability and experience identifying Midwestern fishes, operating a boat, hauling trailers, and driving four-wheel-drive vehicles are preferred.
Salary: $13.00 - $15.00 per hour depending on experience, up to 40 hours per week. Estimated start and end dates are June 1, 2022, through December 16, 2022, but the start date could be earlier if desired.
