Job Title: Graduate Student Intern – Web Application Developer for Green Infrastructure Solutions Toolkit (GIST)
Job Overview
We are seeking a motivated and skilled graduate student to develop the web application component of the Green Infrastructure Solutions Toolkit (GIST), a decision-support tool aimed at enhancing climate resiliency in rural Illinois communities. The toolkit will enable stakeholders to explore, design, and implement green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) solutions tailored to their local needs. This is an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience in climate resiliency, user-centered design, and the intersection of data science and environmental policy.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with researchers from ISWS, Illinois Extension, and the Grainger College of Engineering to understand project objectives and technical requirements.
- Develop the user interface (UI) and backend functionality of the web-based decision-support tool.
- Implement data visualization features, including interactive hydrologic performance metrics.
- Integrate soil, rainfall, and other environmental data into the application.
- Conduct usability testing with pilot communities and stakeholders to refine functionality.
- Document the application development process, including technical specifications and user guides.
- Ensure the application adheres to accessibility and web standards.
Qualifications
Required:
- Currently enrolled in a graduate program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong programming skills in web development (e.g., HTML, CSS, JavaScript, or similar languages).
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
Preferred:
- Background in environmental science, climate resiliency, or GIS.
- Experience with data visualization libraries or frameworks.
- Knowledge of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) principles.
- Experience with user-centered design and usability testing.
