The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking field technicians (2-4 possible) to conduct applied research in the area of large-river ecology in Southwestern Illinois. Technicians will assist large river ecologists in the collection of standardized long-term fish and water quality monitoring data and additional research projects. This position will be 40 hours per week and will be located at the Great Rivers Field Station in Alton, Illinois.
Salary: $14 - $15 per hour, depending on experience
Available: May - October 2022, with likely extension to December 2022.
Qualifications
- Must have or be in the process of working toward a bachelor’s degree in aquatic ecology, biology, zoology or related field.
- Must demonstrate a working knowledge of, or ability and willingness to learn how to conduct, fish sampling and water quality sampling in a large river system.
- Understanding and experience with following standardized sampling protocols is preferred.
- Experience using large boats, outboard motors, trailers, four-wheel drive vehicles and maintaining field equipment is a plus.
- Candidates will participate in boat electrofishing and fish netting, as well as be expected to perform field station maintenance duties when needed.
- This position requires significant physical exertion (including carrying 40 or more pounds of gear), commitment to safety, and meticulous data recording.
- The individual must have a valid driver’s license and the ability to swim.
- Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, long days including possible nighttime work and weekends.
