Recognized for her exceptional contributions, Mera Hertel, a cornerstone of the Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS), has been honored with the prestigious Prairie Research Institute’s 2024 Distinguished Support Staff Award.
With over three decades of dedicated service to ISAS, Mera's journey is one marked by unwavering commitment to ISAS and genuine spirit of camaraderie. From her early days as an archaeological field technician to her current role as graphic design manager, Mera has left a mark on ISAS.
According to Alleen Betzenhauser, coordinator for the American Bottom Field Station and one of Mera’s nominators, "Mera has consistently produced high-quality figures and has trained other staff in artifact and field photography, contributing to over 100 compliance reports and numerous publications for ISAS." Her expertise in archaeological field methods and graphic design has been pivotal in advancing ISAS's mission of disseminating research results to the public and stakeholders.
Tamira Brennan, head of the curation section and another nominator, echoed this sentiment, stating, "Mera's professionalism and congeniality are unparalleled. She is well-loved by her colleagues and has been an integral part of fostering a supportive work environment at ISAS." Mera's self-taught expertise in graphic design and her support for her colleagues have set a standard of excellence that is truly commendable.
As Mera prepares for retirement, her impending departure serves as a poignant reminder of the impact she has made on the ISAS community. Her legacy extends far beyond her technical skills, encompassing her warmth and generosity.
