The start of the fall semester is a time of energy and excitement. Students will make new friends and welcome the arrival of their old friends as a new semester begins. Fall semester is going to look a little different this year at Illinois, but the Illinois spirit is alive and well. Students will be adjusting to different living situations and class structure. Social distancing makes connecting with others a little more of a challenge, but nothing impossible. Remind your student they are not just thinking about their health and safety, but about others they come in contact with as well. Illinois will do all it can to bring that energy and excitement to events, athletics, academics, and in the residence halls to make your student feel a part of the Illinois Family.
There will be ups and downs in your college student’s life, which is normal, but you as a family member can help your student make fall semester a success! During their time at Illinois, your student will be taking on more responsibility and becoming more independent. College is a transition for both you and your student, and within the COVID-19 epidemic it is even more so, but with planning, support, and connecting with resources both you and your student can have a successful Illinois experience.
To help your student through this transition we ask you to be their coach and mentor. Support them when they need it and encourage them to see this period in their life as a new adventure. Here are ways to support your student: text/email/say encouraging words, talk through ways to handle different situations like navigating academic challenges or finding ways to support their mental health throughout the semester. If your student is worried about getting sick, consider walking them through how to use their insurance, make an appointment or show them where to get care, wear your orange and blue every Friday for #IlliniFridays, participate in online Illinois events, and when it is safe to, return to campus to experience Illinois at its finest.
This period of time will be remembered in history, so encourage your student to make the most of it by trying new things, being creative, and learning new skills. We are the Illinois Family, and we will make it through stronger and more resilient than we thought possible. I-L-L!
