As Move-In Day approaches, the biggest question students ask is, “What do I need to bring?” We’ve provided a complete packing checklist on our website that can help you and your student figure out just what they will need for their first year living on campus. Keep in mind, however, that your student will most likely be sharing the room with someone else. The biggest advice that returning students and parents share is, “Don’t bring too much!” A good rule of thumb is to gather everything you think they will need and then try to cut it in half.

University Housing lets you rent or order items in advance to make moving in easier!
- Renting a MicroFridge (combination microwave, freezer, and refrigerator) can be a great solution for your room. The MicroFridge will be placed in the student’s room prior to Move-In and they will just need to return it at the end of the year. Order at www.bedloft.com.
- Save the hassle of hauling a carpet to campus. Order a custom-fit carpet that will be delivered to the student’s room before you arrive on campus. Order at www.ocm.com/uil/carpets.
Mailing Packages
If you are thinking about mailing some items ahead of time, plan their arrival for after Move-In Day. Once packages arrive in the hall, students will receive an email at their Illinois email address letting them know what time they are able to pick them up. They can also sign up for cell phone or text notification in MyHousing. Make sure any packages you send have the student’s full first and last name and the correct hall name and room number. Students can access their mailing address in MyHousing.
Bed Setup
If your student wants their beds bunked, lofted, or bi-leveled, need a bed rail, or want a bed extender, they will need to log-in to MyHousing to request a bed configuration. If they miss the deadline, they can submit an online request on Move-In Day, but it may not be completed that same day.
