I am a mother. My son is six years old and just started kindergarten. I already find myself feeling anxious about his schooling experiences.
I can only assume how anxious I will feel…
- if he chooses to go to college
- if he should go away to college
- if he should choose a college in a different state
- if he should choose a college in a different country
I imagine that this may be what you might feel now. I want to share a campus resource that may help alleviate some of your concerns.
I am an Assistant Dean in the Office of the Dean of Students; our office manages the Student Assistance Center (SAC) and the Emergency Dean Program. The role of the SAC is to be a source of information and support to Illinois students. Part of that is doing what we can to ensure that students have the support they need to function well and pursue their academic goals. We work closely with students who may be struggling for a variety of reasons. The SAC helps students understand university policies and procedures, educates them about and connects them to campus and community resources, and supports students in crisis.
If you are feeling anxious or worried about what your student is experiencing on campus, please encourage your student to ask for help. Refer your students to the Student Assistance Center. Students and families can call us at (217) 333-0050, email us at helpdean@illinois.edu, or visit our office at 300 Turner Student Services Building. Although we are not going to be able to take all of your anxiety away, we are here to help in any way that we can.
