NUEL 572 Foundations in Global Health is a 3-credit course being offered during the Spring 2026 semester. We will explore social, environmental, economic and political factors impacting global health, the globalization of health and healthcare, and health disparities using a social justice and human rights lens.
This course is open to all graduate students and undergraduates with the permission of the instructor.
We will cover many topics, including, but not limited to:
- The colonial, military, and religious roots of global health
- Various government and non-governmental bodies dedicated to improving global health
- Causes and impacts of health disparities
- Global burden of disease
- Health care financing and health care delivery systems
- Traditional health practices
- The impact of culture on health and what we can learn about it from literature
- The challenges of developing a global health workforce
- Developing a context analysis of a humanitarian health crisis
- And many more

The course meets synchronously via Zoom on 7 Monday mornings during the semester from 9-1200. The dates are: 1/12, 1/26, 2/16, 3/2, 3/16, 4/13 and 4/27.
