As the Health Promotion: Violence and Injury Prevention Intern you will work with IDPH’s Violence and Injury Prevention Section (VIPS) to support firearm safety awareness efforts. IDPH was tasked with increasing awareness of the Firearm Restraining Orders (FRO) and of safe storage options through public awareness and programming. Specifically, VIPS staff assist IDPH Communication Office with development of public awareness campaigns by providing subject matter content and development of webpages. VIPS also oversees a grant program to fund organizations to implement firearm safe storage strategies.
Responsibilities:
- Assist in researching content and compiling information to create additional webpages on firearm safety for various topics and audiences. This includes developing high-quality materials for the Pause to Heal (P2H) campaign and safe storage efforts, and supporting the new data dashboard on violent deaths and firearm injuries. - Review materials created by the Firearm Safe Storage Strategies (FSSS) grantees to identify content to add to the webpage and/or create publications.
- Participate in internal and external meetings to be informed on the topic and identify opportunities to create public awareness products to address topics and audiences which need more awareness.
- Develop publications and other tools to increase awareness of the FRO and firearm safety. Publications include, but not limited to fact sheets, infographics, social media, website content, etc.
- Share updates on status of projects during meetings, such as FSSS grantee meetings.
- Assist in compiling firearm safety information to include in the state strategic plan, if needed.
- Assist in building partnerships and collaborations.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a graduate degree in Communications, Health Communications, Digital Marketing, or related field.
- Familiarity with publication development, social media, and digital communication is a plus.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team.
Duration and Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship with flexible scheduling options to accommodate academic commitments. Academic credit may be available depending on your institution's guidelines. This is a fully remote opportunity for 15-20 hours a week.
