Location: Westchester, IL – Must be located within 1 hour of Westchester, Illinois. This is a hybrid position requiring in-person work at the Westchester office on Mondays and Tuesdays, and remote work on two additional weekdays.
The Human Resources Intern will support the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) Human Resources team by assisting with recruitment coordination, career event planning, data tracking, and employee engagement initiatives. This position offers hands-on experience in public sector HR operations, outreach coordination, and internal engagement projects.

Responsibilities:
- Manage and update job advertisements across various job boards, career websites, and social media platforms.
- Research and coordinate scheduling for career fairs and community events for IDPH recruiters in both northern and southern Illinois, including events targeting high school students.
- Collect resumes and related data from events and accurately enter the information into IDPH databases.
- Manage and respond to all employment and internship-related inquiries received through email. Conduct follow-up communications via email or phone as needed.
- Track data for northern and southern recruiters and generate monthly reports.
- Provide on-site support to HR Recruiters for northern region events as requested.
- Maintain and restock recruiting materials and supplies stored in the Westchester office.
- Support the HR Special Projects team with internal employee engagement efforts.
- Research monthly wellness topics and contribute to the IDPH Wellness and Engagement Committee’s monthly meetings.
- Assist in creating fun, inclusive, and engaging employee activities.
- Perform other duties as assigned that fall within the scope of the responsibilities listed above.
Qualifications:
- Currently pursuing a degree (undergraduate or graduate) in Human Resources, Business Administration, Psychology, or Sociology
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Teams, Outlook).
- Familiarity with SmartSheet is preferred.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Must be located within 1 hour of Westchester, Illinois.
- Must be available to work onsite on Mondays and Tuesdays, with two additional remote workdays per week. Work hours to be scheduled in coordination with the Assistant Bureau Chief upon hire.
Duration and Compensation:
This is an unpaid internship with flexible scheduling options to accommodate academic commitments. This is a hybrid position in Westchester, Illinois, for 20-24 hours a week. Academic credit may be available depending on your institution's guidelines. Applicants must be available to work on a hybrid schedule with two days onsite in Westchester, IL.
