On St. Patrick’s Day, many people in America think of “Irish” imagery such as shamrocks, beer, and pots of gold at the end of rainbows. But Ireland has a rich and wondrous history, some of which has only recently been – or still remains to be – unearthed. Join the Spurlock staff as we discover the many treasures of the The Boyne Valley (including the Passage Tombs of Knowth, Newgrange, and Dowth); consider why humans build rock formations; decorate rocks**; and craft a rock formation on the museum grounds.
**NOTE: Please bring a clean stone of your choosing to paint or decorate. If you would like to take it home with you, please bring TWO stones to decorate, and leave one with us!**
Takeaways...
This was a really great event, and it was neat to see how people interpreted the north/south/east/west signs on the floor. I had placed the signs as guideposts, to mark out an area that would symbolize the Zen Garden, so that participants would know which direction the sun would face. That way they could choose where to place their stones. But one little girl finished very quickly and placed all three stones she made directly ON the "east" sign. This started a trend, and a lot of the other folks followed suit, placing their stones on that sign and then the other signs.
Finally someone placed a rock somewhere in the center, and then others ventured out into the middle with theirs as well.
Another takeaway from this event was how many people brought stones to share. This was not the first time that people have brought items to share, and it really lends to a sense of community at these events. Here are some of the stones that people made!
I'm very excited to install the stones people made into the Zen Garden, but I've been waiting for F&S to clean it up first. It's been a lesson in patience. :)
