Winter can be so dull and grey. Let’s liven it up a little! Join the Spurlock staff in making stained-glass candle jars to add color and brightness around the house. Please bring a clean, recycled jar or wide-mouth bottle with the labels removed. We will provide extras if you forget!
Takeaways...
This event was so, so fun! Claire and I were very busy, because sixty people showed up. We ran out of table room, and some people chose to sit on the floor. The vibe was fantastic as families and individuals sat at communal tables to create together.
Even though we had jars ready in case people forgot to bring a recycled one, we didn't have to worry, because many people brought extras - and some people even came back to drop off more!
My favorite story from this event comes from this creation. A couple walked up with their grandson and explained that they had brought him to the museum and hadn't known the event was taking place. When I explained what we were doing and offered them a jar, the couple asked the child if he wanted to stay and make something, and he said yes. When he was finished, they came to show me what he had made. They explained that he had just gotten a baby sister, but she was in the NICU, and they had brought the boy to the museum to get him away from the hospital for a while. I asked him if the candle he had made was for his baby sister, and he said yes, that he planned to put it in her hospital room. These connections are the reason I do activities like this.
Below are some photos of other creations. Note that the first one is "upside down" but was done this way very much on purpose!
One child even chose not to make a candle at all, instead making a jewelry set.
