  • Visiting Scientific Specialist, Environmental Assessments Researcher - Illinois State Geological Survey

    The Illinois State Geological Survey is seeking to hire a Visiting Scientific Specialist, Environmental Assessments Researcher (up to 3 depending on applicant pool and programmatic need) to perform sponsored research on environmental assessments.  The assessments will involve evaluating potential environmental and geologic hazards and risks for Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) infrastructure improvement projects. IDOT's infrastructure projects range in size and can involve anything from a single property to hundreds of properties across many miles of existing or future highways.  IDOT uses the assessments completed by ISGS to protect workers and public safety, to reduce IDOT's liability, and to minimize delays by operating in an efficient and cost-effective manner.  May 2024 graduates are welcome to apply.  Position is based in Savoy, Illinois. 

  • Visiting Scientific Specialist, Wetland Science - Illinois Natural History Survey/ PRI

    The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking up to 2 Visiting Scientific Specialists in the area of Wetland Science to contribute to the research activities of the Survey by conducting research and providing technical expertise in support of research grants, with a particular emphasis on wetlands. These positions will be based in Champaign, Illinois at the Illinois Natural History Survey. Applications must be submitted by 6:00 pm on Monday, February 26, 2024. 

  • Scientific Specialist, Historic Architecture - Illinois State Archaeological Survey

    The Illinois State Archaeological Survey is seeking to hire a Scientific Specialist, Historic Architecture (up to 2 depending on applicant pool and programmatic need) to conduct historical research on architectural and archaeological resources (standing buildings and architectural structural remains encountered during archaeological investigations) encountered during investigations for Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS) and the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to identify and evaluate those eligible for listing on the National Register of Historic Places in accordance with the rules and regulations of the National Historic Preservation Act (16 U.S.C. 470) and its implementing regulations (36 CFR 61, Appendix A) and the Illinois State Agency Historic Resources Preservation Act (20 ILCS 3420).   Position will be based in either Champaign or Jacksonville, Illinois. 

  • Visiting Senior Scientific Specialist, Geographic Information Science - Illinois State Geological Survey

    The Illinois State Geological Survey is seeking to hire a Visiting Senior Scientific Specialist, Geographic Information Science (up to 4 depending on applicant pool and programmatic need) to assist and collaborate with an interdisciplinary project team to 1) conduct geospatial analysis of geologic, engineering, environmental, and societal datasets, 2) facilitate access to geospatial data and analysis products internally and on the web, and 3) develop map and data products with a goal of translating complex geological and social analysis into decision support-input and community engagement tools that are easy to understand.  Position is based in Champaign, Illinois. 

  • Associate Research Scientist, Coastal Resilience - Prairie Research Institute

    The Prairie Research Institute (PRI) in partnership with Illinois-Indiana Sea Grant (IISG) and the Great Lakes Higher Education Consortium (GLHEC) through the Office of the Vice President for Economic Development and Innovation at the University of Illinois System, is seeking a Coastal Resilience Scientist to conduct impactful research, enhance outreach programs, and foster collaborations in Great Lakes coastal resilience. Great Lakes coastal resilience is vital, focusing on the dynamic interaction across the critical interface encompassing land, coast, and water in response to human and climate-induced ecological and geomorphological changes. This role requires enhancing coordination, communication, and teamwork within PRI and across other university units. It involves developing and leading comprehensive outreach programs to educate a range of stakeholders from government officials to the general public about coastal resilience challenges and viable management solutions. Interaction with external partners, including governmental bodies, industries, and NGOs, is essential, along with fostering international collaborations and effectively disseminating study results through various mediums and platforms.   Position will be based in Winthrop Harbor, Illinois. 

  • Visiting Senior Scientific Specialist, Geoscience Data R&D - Illinois State Geological Survey

    The Illinois State Geological Survey is seeking to hire a Visiting Senior Scientific Specialist, Geoscience Data R&D to assist and collaborate to 1) develop an information management strategy for geologic and engineering research data, 2) facilitate data transmission among interdisciplinary project teams, 3) translate data across different data structures, and 4) develop applications and workflow procedures with a goal of data preservation and analysis.  Position is based in Champaign, Illinois.
