Le'Passion Darby, Ed.M. '22 EPOL, has published a chapter in a new book examining the heritage messages conveyed by statuary monuments, focusing on statues and monuments of women and exploring the challenges of depicting women's key roles across different societies.
Her chapter, Why Katherine Johnson? Why Now? The Shifting Symbolism in Black Women Statuary at HBCUs examines the motivations behind West Virginia State University's decision to honor NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson and explores the monument’s symbolism and timing through insights from university presidents, staff, students, and the sculptor.
The book, published by Routledge, is titled Monuments, Statues, and Commemorations of Women.
