The University of Illinois chapter of Aspiring Educators was honored by the National Education Association as the Outstanding Emerging Chapter at its conference this summer.
“This award reflects the incredible growth and transformation of our chapter," says Michal Nizar, president of the chapter. "It shows the power of student leadership and collaboration when we connect our passions as future educators to advocacy, equity, and community. We are all so proud of what we've built together and what it means for the future of education."
Nizar mentions that the chapter has made great strides in the last year, focusing on increasing their connection to the Illinois Education Association.
"At the start of the fall semester, we restructured our leadership team, became fully engaged with IEA leadership, and prioritized social justice, advocacy, and community building," Nizar says. "As a result, our chapter grew from about eight active members to over 50, with many stepping into leadership roles and engaging in professional development opportunities."
The Aspiring Educators Program supports, develops, and empowers diverse, pre-service teachers with the resources, networks, and opportunities to excel as educators and leaders, both as students and throughout their careers.
