Alexandre (“Sasha”) Ardichvili, is Professor of HRD and Hellervik Endowed Chair in Leadership and Adult Career Development at the University of Minnesota. He is President-elect of the University Council on Work and Human Resource Education, past editor-in-chief of Human Resource Development International, and Fellow at the Center for Ethical Business Cultures. Dr. Ardichvili has published two books and more than 70 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters related to HRD, international education, leadership and leadership development, entrepreneurship, CSR and business ethics, and knowledge management. He has done consulting and applied research at Caterpillar, 3M, Honeywell, the Carlson Companies, ADM, ADC, BI Worldwide, Target, and many other businesses and non-profits in the US and in countries of Europe, Asia, and Latin America.
In this presentation Dr. Ardichvili will share his reflections on recent changes and future trends in leadership development (LD) practice and theory. Leadership development is the largest expense item in HRD budgets of most large business organizations and government organizations in the US and around the world; it is also a fast growing area of focus for HRD at higher education institutions, non-governmental organizations, and non-profits. However, numerous industry reports and academic articles suggest that most organizations are dissatisfied with the outcomes and impact of their LD efforts, and are searching for better solutions. Dr. Ardichvili will provide an overview of emerging new practices and theoretical frameworks of leadership development. He will share lessons learned from two inter-related streams of his work: LD-related scholarship (including work on an edited book on LD in emerging markets and a special issue of the Advances in Developing Human Resources on new trends in LD); and consulting and applied research in large business organizations, including the Target Corporation, Cargill, and BI Worldwide, to name a few.
