Thanks for a fascinating history of this, especially the 16th century grammarian's interest in the topic. I was going to comment that NCTE suggests using "everyone" with "they" at conferences. But when I went back to check, I couldn't find that conference guideline on the website. Was I mistaken or did NCTE have such a notice on the website and then later delete it?

I don't know what NCTE's policy on singular they is, Mickey. Let me know, though, if you find out.
