It might be worth noting that here in the UK, we also usually say 9/11 but our date format is usually the other way round; we would always say 5th of November, never November 5th.In the same way, I read somewhere else that the only US date in UK format used with any regularity is the fourth of July.

The continental United States has only been severely attacked twice. Pearl Harbor Day is always "Pearl Harbor" in first reference, and thereafter, Dec.7, 1941,probably due to FDR's often-quoted speech on Dec.8, 1941. It struck me as odd that the year was left off the 9/11 phrase - or is 9/11/01 perhaps too bulky for easy repetition?
