  • Speak English in Arizona, or I'll see you in court

The immediate problem that I see is based on the ability of people to sue for damages if they are English-only speakers.  Many cab drivers only speak English (our personal experiences notwithstanding, LOL) and I have had more than one complain to me that he couldn't get a job with some companies because of that fact.

This new policy makes it impossible for an employer to protect the needs of her customers; if the owner of a business wants to hire a bilingual employee because a large segment of her customers do not speak English, the monoligual English speaker can now sue the employer.

This makes me very uneasy.

This discussion reminds me of a quote of an unnamed congressman in Bill Bryson's "The Mother Tongue", who offered in support of a House bill to make English the official language of the United States, "If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it's good enough for me."  This statement was, in turn, antipated by Mark Twain: "Suppose you were an idiot; and suppose you were a member of Congress.  But I repeat myself."  Twain died before Arizona was admitted to statehood and proved beyond any reasonable doubt that legislators are unencumbered by common sense.
