  • 2024 Research and Education for the Advancement of Compassionate Healthcare (REACH) Program

    The Carle Illinois College of Medicine REACH Program is an intensive clinical research immersion summer experience for undergraduate students interested in pursuing a career in healthcare.  In addition to this research experience, students will also gain information about preparing for medical school.  REACH is designed to increase the presence of students underrepresented in the field of medicine.

  • 2024 Clarkson McNair Scholars Research Program

    The Clarkson McNair Scholars Program, located in northern New York, offers a 10-week summer research program with a stipend, plus a room and board package totaling more than $5,500.  Clarkson's research for McNair Scholars focuses on engineering or science.  Other benefits of the McNair Program include workshops designed to explore the graduate school application process, GRE prep classes, graduate school visits, faculty and peer mentoring, and opportunities to present your research locally and at national conferences.

  • 2024 REU FoDOMMaT Program

    FoDOMMaT (The Future of Discovery: Training Students to Build and Apply Open Source Machine Learning Models and Tools) is a 10-week on-site summer Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign’s National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA).  FoDOMMaT will bring together 10 undergraduate students, particularly those who would otherwise lack such an opportunity, to work on cutting-edge projects from May 20 – July 26, 2024.  The program will begin with a week-long training where students are taught machine learning (ML) / deep learning (/DL) methods.  They will work for the remaining nine weeks on a specific research project under the guidance of a pair of research mentors, one from the project’s research area and the other with expertise in machine learning.

  • 2024 Research Experience and Mentoring (REM) Program - CISTAR

    The Research Experience and Mentoring (REM) Program is a paid opportunity for students to participate in a combined 2024 summer experience:  6 weeks doing cutting-edge research at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, from May 20 – June 28, 2024, and 4 weeks mentoring kids participating in an NSBE SEEK camp.  

    The research focus this summer is Energy for Our Growing World--how a wide range of energy sources (renewables, emerging energy technologies—biofuels, solar, nuclear, wind, shale, and other fossil fuels) serve the needs of people and communities, and how we balance those needs against the impact these energy sources differentially have on our world.

  • 2024 Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program - CISTAR

    The Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Program is a paid opportunity for students to engage in an intensive research project and participate in professional development.  The REU program includes ten weeks of research at Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN, or at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, NM, from May 20 – July 26, 2024.  

    Participants will be matched with an Engineering faculty member and graduate mentor on a research project of mutual interest and receive a total stipend of $6,000 for 10 weeks with CISTAR.

  • 2024 Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS)

    The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) invites you to present at the 2024 Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS) on Thursday, April 25, 2024 at the Illini Union (A, B, C, South Lounge, and the 2nd Floor).  The URS is the signature event of Undergraduate Research Week (April 21 - 27).  Throughout the day, students will present their oral and poster presentations, creative performances, and interactive exhibits to members of the campus and local community.

  • Lurie Cancer Center Undergraduate Summer Research Internships

    Administrators at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University invite undergraduate students interested in biomedical and health sciences to participate in leading-edge cancer research and career exploration.  Participants work full-time (35-40 hours/week) under the mentorship of top cancer researchers in state-of-the-art laboratories and research facilities to help advance novel research projects in cell and molecular biology, cancer immunology, metabolism, clinical investigation, developmental therapeutics, genomics, population science, health disparities, bioinformatics and other focus areas.  Immersive research training is complemented by faculty lectures, skills workshops, and career development activities.

    Undergraduate students may participate in one of two cancer research internships at the Lurie Cancer Center:

  • Diversity in Cancer Research at the University of Chicago

    Diversity in Cancer Research (DICR) is a cancer research training program for undergraduates interested in careers in biomedicine.  For ten weeks during the summer, participants work full time in the laboratories of established cancer researchers at the University of Chicago, gaining hands-on experience in areas at the forefront of the field. 

    Rigorous research training is complemented with year-round career development and skill-building workshops, leadership training, opportunities in community outreach and engagement, and personalized mentorship for post-baccalaureate transitions.

  • 2024 St. Elmo Brady Symposium

    The UIUC Student Chapter of NOBCChE is excited to present the Spring 2024 St. Elmo Brady Symposium.  The St. Elmo Brady Lecture Series is held each semester to honor Illinois Chemistry Alumni St. Elmo Brady, the first Black American to obtain a PhD in Chemistry in the United States (1916).  This year’s event will feature guest speaker Dr. David Kwabi from the University of Michigan on February 10, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. in Room 104 at the Illini Union. The lecture will be preceded by breakfast at 9:30 a.m. and followed by lunch, informational panels, and a poster session in the afternoon.

    The poster session will feature undergraduate and graduate student presenters, and it is open to all students performing STEM-related research.

  • 2024 Big 10 Engineering - Diversity & Inclusion Career Event (Virtual)

    Big 10 Engineering - Diversity & Inclusion Career Event is an engagement fair that aims to highlight top employers dedicated to diversity and inclusion for The University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Minnesota, Michigan State University, Indiana University, University of Iowa, University of Illinois, Northwestern University, University of Illinois-Chicago, University of Maryland, University of Nebraska and Ohio State University.  The virtual fair will be held from within on Handshake on Tuesday, January 23, from 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.  The virtual format of the event encourages networking between students, alumni, and recruiting professionals that will open the door to co-op, intern, and full-time opportunities in the field of engineering.

  • Columbia Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE)

    The Columbia Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE) program is a 10-week, fully funded summer research program that gives students access to research experience and professional development at Columbia and the chance to be mentored by STEM faculty and professionals.  This year's program will run from May 30 – August 3, 2024.  There is no application fee and no program fees for students.  In addition, students will be provided with Housing, Dining, a Summer living stipend, Travel reimbursement, and Campus Amenities Access.

  • Solar Energy Technology Fellow: U.S. Department of Energy

    The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE) Science, Technology and Policy (STP) Program is seeking to develop future leaders in energy efficiency and renewable energy policy.  The EERE STP appointments provide an opportunity for highly talented scientists and engineers to participate in policy-related projects at DOE's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy in Washington, D.C.  The Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO) drives research, manufacturing, and market solutions to make the abundant solar energy resources in the United States more affordable and accessible for Americans.

  • National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) Scholars Connect Program

  • Summer 2024 Undergraduate Health Equity Research Experience at Mayo Clinic

    The Interdisciplinary Health Sciences Institute and Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance invite outstanding undergraduates to apply for the 2024 Health Equity Research Experience at Mayo Clinic.  This 10-week summer program gives undergraduates the opportunity to examine health equity through hands-on research at Mayo Clinic.  Two Illinois undergraduate students will be matched with a faculty mentor and be fully immersed in the research and culture of a major medical center with top-notch scientists.  $6,000 will be awarded by the Mayo Clinic & Illinois Alliance to cover living expenses during the 10-week program.

  • Udall Scholarship Information Sessions and Workshop

    The Udall Scholarship awards $7,000 to sophomores or juniors who are taking action to address environmental concerns and plan on a career related to the environment.  1) Sophomores and juniors who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or U.S. permanent residents and who are committed to a career focused on the environment AND 2) Native American sophomores and juniors who are interested in tribal policy and health care are eligible to apply.  A successful applicant will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate leadership and a commitment to service.  

    The University of Illinois may nominate up to six students for the Udall Scholarship.

  • ORISE Undergraduate Scholarship Opportunity, Artificial Intelligence in STEM

    To showcase Artificial Intelligence (AI) in STEM, ORISE is hosting a research-based challenge for undergraduate students.  The challenge is for students to develop an infographic to communicate how AI is used in STEM disciplines.  Thorough submissions will illustrate how AI is applied in STEM fields, focusing on key principles, practical applications, pioneering uses, ethical considerations, and/or future prospects.  Your infographic could win you a $5,000 scholarship.

  • Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) Summer Program 2024

    The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Transportation Security Laboratory (TSL) Visiting Scientist Program is offering 10-week summer internships for undergraduate and graduate students in 2024.

    In order to be considered, undergraduate applicants must meet each of the following criteria:

  • SmallSat Alliance Collegiate Space Competition 2024

    The Small Sat Alliance (SSA) invites tomorrow’s space leaders – today’s college students – to propose solutions to 21st century space challenges as it launches its 2nd annual Collegiate Space Competition (CSC).  This year, the CSC will revisit two topics, Orbital Debris and Environmental Monitoring, for students to propose solutions to.  Students may participate as individuals or as a team to craft a dynamic response to one of the topics that includes technical and policy considerations.  Students/teams who have submitted before may not reply to a prompt for which they have already submitted with the same/similar content or approach; however, returning students are encouraged to submit entirely new and original responses given that there are many approaches to solving these challenges.

    For all interested students, the 2023-2024 Competition Portal opens on October 31, 2023 and closes on April 15, 2024.

  • 2024 Mayo Clinic Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Preselection for Illinois Students

    The Illinois preselection period is now open for Mayo Clinic’s Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF), a 10-week program that invites students to work alongside Mayo Clinic researchers on cutting-edge biomedical research.

  • NNSA Minority Serving Institution Internship Program – Final Reminder

    The National Nuclear Security Administration Minority Serving Institutions Internship Program (NNSA-MSIIP) is now accepting applications for internships starting in the summer of 2024 for undergraduate and graduate students currently enrolled at Minority Serving Institutions.  12-week summer internships begin on June 3, 2024 and end on August 23, 2024.  Year-long internships, beginning on June 3, 2024 and ending on May 23, 2025, include full-time participation during the summer and part-time participation during the academic year.

    The HACIA Scholarship & Education Foundation has established an undergraduate scholarship award for Latino students enrolled in a technology, architecture, engineering, construction, and professional services industries curriculum at an accredited university.  The Scholarship Committee will be selecting candidates for a monetary award of $5,000 to be used toward college costs.

  • SmithGroup Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Scholarship Program

    The SmithGroup Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) Scholarship Program provides students from historically underrepresented demographics with the opportunity to attain their professional goals while advancing the architecture/engineering/construction (AEC) industry and improving the built environment.  Applicants must be current undergraduate (at least a junior level standing) or graduate students in an accredited architecture, interior design, planning, landscape architecture or engineering program in the United States. 

    This scholarship includes a one-time award of $6,000 to offset the student's tuition at their current academic institution (5 scholarships are awarded each year).  Additionally, the scholarship recipients serve as paid summer interns at SmithGroup offices across the United States (Internship is a program requirement).

    The Homeland Security Professional Opportunities for Student Workforce to Experience Research program is now accepting applications for internships starting in the summer of 2024.  The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate Office of University Programs sponsors the Professional Opportunities for Student Workforce to Experience Research (HS-POWER) Program for undergraduate and graduate students.  HS-POWER is open to students majoring in a broad spectrum of homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines as well as DHS mission-relevant research areas which includes social sciences.  As a participant in the HS-POWER Program, you will participate in quality research experiences with federal research facilities and other DHS-STEM focused entities nationwide, and establish connections with DHS professionals.  Appointments will be for 10 consecutive weeks during the months of May – July.

  • General ELA applications for Fall 2024 are now open!

    The applications for upper-class students to serve as Engineering Learning Assistants (ELAs) for ENG 100, ENG 101, and ENG 398 in Fall 2024 are now open!  New General ELAs are expected to complete a 12-week training course (ENG 377) in Spring 2024 and work about 5 – 10 hours per week during the Fall 2024 semester.   Wages for General ELAs in Fall 2024 will be $14/hour.

    The Louis Stokes Midwest Regional Center of Excellence (LSMRCE) is hosting its 2023 annual conference, "Inclusion by Design: Nurturing Diversity in STEM," on November 3 – 5, 2023 at the Hilton Oak Brook Hills Resort and Conference Center in Oak Brook, Illinois.  This conference offers students, faculty mentors, educational researchers, and program administrators a platform to exchange knowledge and cultivate a community of practitioners and scholars in broadening the participation of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  More conference details are available at this link

  • Goldwater Scholarship Information Sessions & Workshop

    If you are a sophomore or junior in a STEM field who has had meaningful research experiences and you plan on pursuing a Ph.D. in science, math, or engineering, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is for you!

    Eligibility
    Sophomores and juniors who in the upper quarter of their class (typically a minimum of 3.5 GPA) and who are U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents are eligible to apply

    The Goldwater scholarship provides $7,500 per full academic year for undergraduate educational expenses.  Sophomores can expect to receive funds for a maximum of two years, while juniors can expect to receive funds for a maximum of one year.  All applicants MUST be committed to pursuing a Ph.D. in the research fields of mathematics, science, or engineering. 

    Students who plan to study medicine are eligible ONLY if they plan on a research career rather than a career as a medical doctor or veterinarian in a private practice.  Typical fields of study include, but are not limited to, applied science, astronomy, biochemistry, biology, chemistry, computer science, entomology, environmental science, genetics, geology, mathematics, microbiology, neurobiology, physics, zoology, and all fields of engineering.  Illinois may nominate up to 4 students for the Goldwater Scholarship.

  • Truman Scholarship: An Opportunity for Illini Who Want to Change the World

    The prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship is available to College Juniors who are U.S. citizens with a record of strong academic work, leadership, community service, and commitment to a career in public service.  The scholarship awards $30,000 for use toward a graduate degree in public service fields.  Public service includes government, uniformed services, public interest organizations, non-governmental research or educational organizations, public and private schools, and other non-profit organizations.  Recipients of the scholarship are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation-funded graduate degree program; this is a non-negotiable condition of receiving funding.

    Application Deadline: The campus deadline for submission is November 6, 2023 at 12:00 p.m.

    Application Dates:  October 3, 2023 – November 17, 2023

    The Optica Foundation provides direct funding and support to Black students passionate about physics, engineering, and light-based technologies.

    Each year, 10 Black undergraduate or graduate level students receive a $7,500 scholarship to help ease the financial burden of college.  Other benefits include a one-year members to Optica, access to mentors, and an invitation to the 2024 Amplify Optics Immersion Program

    Applicants must be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or master's student at a university with at least one year left to complete their education. 

    Undergraduates: have a major in physics, math, chemistry, or engineering and a demonstrated interest in optics and photonics.
