Duties & Responsibilities
- Oversee and lead field research in the collection of lotic fish ecology data.
- Plan, conduct, and participate in innovative research and service activities of the Survey.
- Conduct fish identification, processing, and data entry.
- Ensure field and laboratory equipment is properly maintained, grant and contract obligations are fulfilled, and quality assurance standards are met.
- Assist PI with seeking external funds for research projects and contribute to externally funded projects.
- Perform data entry and statistical analysis.
- Prepare quarterly and final reports to be delivered to funding agencies.
- Manage and analyze research and monitoring data into scientific findings and provide management recommendation to funding agencies, collaborators, and other interested parties.
- Assist PI with translating data into publications and/or presentations to be delivered at professional meetings.
- Supervise, mentor, and lead hourly workers to achieve success and foster a culture of innovation and high-level performance at both individual and organizational levels.
- Provide appropriate training in field research techniques, boater safety, and directing/prioritizing work duties.
- Lead field crews in the collection of fish data using pulsed-DC electrofishing and other sampling gear (benthic trawl, seining net).
- Coordinate field sampling schedule, manage lab safety, and maintain equipment.
- Perform other duties as needed to further the mission and goals of PRI and the Survey.
- Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.
- Participate in Survey, PRI, and outside scientific organizations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrated ability to understand database structure and management as well as statistical and ecological applications. Knowledge with large river ecology. Knowledge with analytical software (e.g., R, ArcGIS). Extensive knowledge of Midwestern US fish identification and rare species regulation. Must be able to swim. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills. Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in commonly employed software and databases.
