Scope of Position
The individuals in these positions will participate in a variety of field and laboratory research activities, providing day-to-day support for NGRREC principal scientists, visiting scholars, and research equipment. The primary responsibilities of these positions will be to assist NGRREC principal scientists in investigations amphibian and reptile ecology and conservation as well as dragonfly ecology and conservation. This research work is part of a coordinated effort of the wildlife ecology lab at NGRREC in investigations of imperiled taxonomic groups. In addition to the primary research responsibilities of these positions, the Environmental Technicians will have knowledge of all NGRREC research programs and assistance with other research projects at NGRREC will be expected.
Key Measurable Expectations
· Provide field and laboratory support for various research and monitoring programs of NGRREC scientists, primarily focused in the wildlife ecology lab.
· Collaborate with NGRREC scientists on other mission-oriented research as needed.
· Assist in the day-to-day running of the wildlife ecology laboratory, including collaboration with less senior members.
· Maintain inventory of general laboratory & field supplies and report items that need to be purchased to supervisor. Shelve and organize restocked items.
· Maintain awareness of NGRREC Standard Lab Safety and Responsibilities.
· Enter data into computerized databases and/or spreadsheets.
· Conduct data analyses as assigned.
· Assist in scientific manuscript and report writing.
· Assist with preparation and submission of research grants.
· Overnight travel will be required during the field season.
· Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in ecology, biology, natural resources, or related discipline is required.
· Research experience in animal ecology.
· Proficiency in the use of software tools including, but not limited to, Microsoft Office package, R, and ArcGIS, as well as a willingness to learn new computer applications.
· Ability to effectively work individually and in a team setting.
· Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
· Research experience with amphibians, reptiles, or dragonflies strongly preferred.
· Experience with plant identification and plant ecology desired.
· Master’s degree in ecology, biology, natural resources, or related discipline.
· Evidence of scientific productivity (e.g., publications, presentations, reports).
Work Hours
Monday-Friday, 8:00-4:30 , Some Evenings , Some Weekends , Other (specify) - Some overnight travel
