About the Job:
This person serves as the laboratory and field research assistant to the PI on zebra mussel research. This project focuses on a mollusk pesticide commonly used to treat adult zebra mussels in lakes. In this project, our goal is to estimate toxicity to zebra mussel veliger larvae in low-dose applications under natural conditions—in research enclosures placed within Lake Minnetonka in Minnesota. The position is full time for 2 months, starting June 5, 2017.
The assistant will help construct sampling gear, work in the field on deploying sampling gear and collecting larval samples, and work in the laboratory scoring the results of toxicity trials using cross polarized light microscopy. Participation in other projects in the McCartney lab, and a longer-term paid position is also available for fall of 2017.
Required qualifications:
High school graduation or the equivalent with some science courses and laboratory experience. Equivalent combination of relevant academic and work experience may be substituted.
Preferred qualifications:
BS or BA degree in natural sciences with experience in microscopy. Interest and experience in aquatic or marine sciences. Candidates with interest and experience in invertebrate animals, and/or invasive species biology and ecology are particularly encouraged to apply.
