Part Time Nature Programs Facilitator

Overview:
We have several immediate openings for early-career environmental studies majors (i.e. recent or soon to be graduates) at our Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, a nature education facility in St. Charles, IL.
These are part-time positions for Nature Program Facilitators and provide opportunities for a wide-range of experiences in delivering nature and environmental education content to audiences ranging from casual visitors in a nature center setting to school programs, scout programs, adult programs, and even birthday parties.
We have immediate need for qualified staff in multiple postions both year-round part-time and seasonal openings.
Qualifications:
Education- Bachelors degree in Environmental Education, Natural Resources, or Biological sciences, or the equivalent in other work or experiences
Experience- Experience communicating information about the natural world to a variety of audiences in a non-formal education setting. Experience in development, design and implementation of nature education programs preferred.
Personal- Professional, enthusiastic, comfortable in public speaking settings, pleasant personality. Work record much show reliability, initiative, tact and productivity.
Knowledge and Ability- Must have basic understanding or regional ecosystems, including plant and animal life. Ability to communicate effectively with diverser audiences, including students, families and the general public. Interpretation of natural resources in formal and informal program settings. Excellent customer service skills. Willingness to work in a veriety of weather conditions and flexibility to work nights and weekends as nature center operations demand.
Essential Functions:
Under the direction and supervision of the Nature Programs Supervisor and the Manager of Nature Programs and Interpretive Services, the Part Time Nature Programs Facilitator shall complete his or her assigned duties to the best of his or her abilities, offering suggestions of better ways to accomplish tasks and be ever mindful of the best interests of the Park District and fellow employees. This position is part-time as defined within the Park District's Personnel Practices Manual. Generally described, this position averages 15 hours per week on an annual basis. This position requires extensive knowledge and ability to:
- Lead and present nature programs and other visitor experiences for a variety of audiences
- Participate in program set-up and tear-down
- Attend program training sessions and develop proficiency in program content and concepts
- Greet program participants in a friendly and professional manner
- Relate life science, earth science, and physical science concepts and content in an age-appropriate and engaging manner
- Teach in a variety of weather conditions
- Travel as needed to off-site venues for program delivery
- Facilitate casual visitor experiences at the Hickory Knolls Discovery Center and in park district natural areas
- Assist in the care of live animals in the center's exhibit areas
- Provide customer service, including reservation and event assistance for the center's rental customers
- Answer telephones, greet and accomodate customers
- Assist Hickory Knolls Discovery Center staff in the completion of their duties
- Maintain orderly, professional and safe workspaces
- Have a working knowledge or and ability to communicate and enforce Park District procedures, rules and policies.
- Follow all safety procedures that pertain to the dutires performed and support all aspects of the Park District's Safety Program
Marginal Functions:
The Part Time Nature Programs Facilitator will also:
- Perform light cleaning and custodial duties
- Assume other responsibilities as assigned
