The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has decided not to offer programs in Japan and Australia in 2021, which includes the Summer 2021, Fall 2021, and 2021-2022 Academic Year terms. Our review of the current environment and host nation restrictions suggests that it is unlikely study abroad participants will be able to enter Japan or Australia before late 2021 at the earliest. To reduce uncertainty and facilitate better planning for you and campus staff, making this decision now is appropriate.
Staff are exploring other opportunities for resuming a select group of programs for Summer or Fall 2021. You may view a list of the programs being considered in My Study Abroad. You can also communicate with the Study Abroad Office managing your program for other opportunities, including deferring studying abroad to the future or transferring your application to the new program. If you pursue another program, you will only be assessed one application fee.
The pandemic’s global trajectory remains unpredictable due to surges, emerging mutations, and associated governmental responses. This presents a significant challenge to resuming study abroad in 2021 and the possibility remains that no programs will proceed. For more information, please see the Study Abroad FAQs regarding COVID-19.
If you are no longer interested in participating, please contact the study abroad office that sponsors your program. You may also log onto My Study Abroad to withdraw your application. No matter your application status, there will be no application fee assessed if you withdraw.
If you have questions, please contact the Study Abroad Office sponsoring your program.
