The Department of State updated the standing Worldwide Caution on July 20, 2026. The full text reads:
July 20, 2026 - The Department of State advises Americans worldwide to exercise increased caution.
Location: Worldwide
Event: Due to heightened tensions in the Middle East, the security environment remains complex with the potential for unforeseen escalation.
Americans currently in the Middle East should exercise caution and heightened vigilance and should be prepared for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions. Please monitor embassy and consular security alerts, local authorities, and the news for breaking developments. Americans outside the Middle East should reconsider travel to and through the region.
U.S. diplomatic facilities, including outside the Middle East, have been targeted. Iran and groups supportive of Iran may target other U.S. interests overseas or at locations associated with the United States and Americans throughout the world.

At this time, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is not changing travel guidance due to this Worldwide Caution. All university travels should continue to follow all applicable university policies and best practices for travel safety.
The Worldwide Caution encourages travelers to “exercise caution and heightened vigilance.” Travelers should maintain vigilance and exercise good situational awareness during travel aboard, regardless of a country’s travel advisory level.
The caution advises of possible flight cancellations, airspace closures, and disruptions to travel in the Middle East. Flight disruptions in the Middle East may have widespread effects on flights in other regions.
Travelers should review country-specific security information from the Department of State.
Many countries in the Middle East region are currently at a U.S. Department of State Level 3 or Level 4 travel advisory, which falls under the university’s high-risk travel review process.
Travelers are encouraged to monitor their flight status, enroll in the Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and follow safety best practices related to protests while abroad.
