As students prepare to study abroad, International Safety and Security would like to share some best practices and resources regarding petty crime and personal property.
- Insuring Personal Property. The university’s international insurance provides inadequate coverage for most personal property theft ($250 maximum with exclusions).
- You should consider additional personal property insurance. Information on optional insurance products can be found on the safety abroad website. This insurance must be purchased before you depart.
- Check if you or your family have coverage through a homeowner’s or renter’s policy. Be aware that homeowner’s policies may have deductibles of $5,000 or more.
- Travel Tips. When traveling abroad, you are likely to carry items (laptops, smartphones, jewelry, eyeglasses, etc.) that may be costly to replace. Airports and train stations are conducive environments for luggage theft.
- Watch your belongings closely. Keep valuables physically with you during travel. Do not travel with more luggage than you can reasonably handle.
- Residential Tips.Unfortunately, residential theft occurs every semester.
- Secure Doors & Access Points! Always lock apartments or dorm rooms (we cannot stress this enough!). Never prop doors open. Store valuables in a secure cubby, drawer, or closet if provided when not being used.
- Petty Crime.Pickpocketing, snatch and grabs, and other thefts are common worldwide, including most study abroad locations.
- Learn Before You Go.As you begin final preparations for this exciting experience, reading more about your destination and smart travel ideas can ease last minute anxiety.
