SUBJECT: Reemployment of Retirees
Updates to the University of Illinois policy Employment of Retirees from the University of Illinois and Any Other SURS-Covered Employer were approved at the July 2024 Board of Trustees meeting. The updates provide additional clarity, however key policy elements remain the same. I encourage you to review the policy to refamiliarize yourself with its requirements. The Illinois Pension Code limits remain the same and retirees receiving an annuity cannot earn more than 40 percent of their highest rate of earnings earned prior to retirement.
As indicated in the policy, to start the hiring process of a SURS annuitant the following steps should be followed:
1. The SURS annuitant should complete the Statement of Annuity Status and submit it to the hiring unit. Please note that this form has been updated.
2. The hiring unit or System Human Resource Services (for system office employees) must complete the Proposal for Re-Employment of a SURS Employer Retiree (Retiree Rehire Form) and submit it for prior approval to the designated Human Resources office before an offer is made and services begin.
