Dear colleagues:
I am pleased to inform you that Joe Barnes has been named Chief Digital Risk Officer (CDRO) for the University of Illinois System. Joe is currently serving as Chief Privacy & Security Officer at UIUC, leading efforts for all privacy and security operations, program management, risk, compliance, and risk awareness for UIUC, UIS, and the System Offices. Joe will assume his new position starting January 16, 2022, pending BOT approval, and report to this office. The establishment of the CDRO position was recommended by the System Enterprise Risk Management Council.
Joe has over 25 years of experience in information technology, both in the corporate and academic settings, with the last fifteen years focusing on cybersecurity and privacy issues in various roles for UIUC and University of Illinois Foundation.
In the new role, Joe will use his significant privacy and security experience and familiarity with the system to establish and maintain a system-wide digital risk management program.
Digital risk comprises the challenges related to continuous change and increasing complexity in the U of I System's operations, technology, and threat environments as they relate to cybersecurity, privacy, compliance, business continuity, and risk management. The CDRO will serve as an advocate for digital risk management throughout the system and support the implementation of the recommendations made by the System-wide Task Force on Cybersecurity.
Please join me in congratulating Joe and wishing him well in his new position.
Sincerely,
Avijit Ghosh
Interim Executive Vice President and Vice President for Acadmic Affairs
