Dear Deans, Directors and Department Heads,
The Provost’s Office just released the Chancellor’s Senior Survey (CSS) Executive Summary, Full Report, and Dashboard for AY 2019-2020. As you recall, the CSS measures the degree to which educational programs at Illinois are enabling students to achieve stated learning objectives, while also providing a measure of students’ perceptions of the effectiveness of academic programs and services at the unit, college and campus levels. More than 1,500 graduating seniors completed the survey this year, translating into a 21% response rate.
Highlights from the AY 2019-2020 Full Report are below:
Student Satisfaction, Participation, and Learning Outcomes
Several encouraging figures highlight where students found value in experiences both on, and off campus. For example,
- 86% of students are either very satisfied or satisfied with their academic experience at Illinois.
- 85% of students participated in a student organization.
- 50% of students participated in volunteer work or community service.
- On average, students indicated that international experiences, work-related experiences, and student organizations were most valuable/meaningful to their personal or professional development.
- On average, students perceived that they improved the most in their ability to think logically and critically, which they attributed to courses in their major.
Faculty and Staff Impact
Overall, students perceived faculty to be more welcoming, respectful, inclusive, and supportive to students, than students were to each other.
- 82% of students felt our faculty were welcoming or very welcoming to students.
- 85% of students felt that faculty were respectful or very respectful to students.
- 98% of students felt our faculty were inclusive to students in varying degrees.
- 99% of students felt that faculty were supportive to students in varying degrees.
We encourage you to utilize CSS data as we continue to find ways to enhance the student learning experience at Illinois. If you have any questions about the Chancellor’s Senior Survey, please contact Linell Edwards, Coordinator for Assessment and Evaluation (lde2018@illinois.edu) or Staci Provezis, Associate Provost for Academic Effectiveness (sprovez2@illinois.edu).
