Dear Colleagues,
This is an annual reminder of the requirements and guidelines for university-related international travel as outlined in the International Travel Safety Policy. This message also provides information about the University of Illinois System’s International Travel Insurance Requirements.
Key Reminders for All Travelers
- The International Travel Safety Policy does not apply to personal travel.
- International Insurance enrollment is compulsory for all university-related international travel (travel outside the 50 states and the District of Columbia).
- Enrollment is completed online via the Safety Abroad website and My Study Abroad portal.
- Faculty and staff may be enrolled by a proxy.
- Graduate students must enroll as students, even for travel conducted during an assistantship. There is no proxy enrollment.
- Fees and payment: the University of Illinois System pays the premium for faculty and staff. Units must pay the insurance fee (by CFOP) for graduate student travel conducted during assistantships.
University of Illinois System International Travel Insurance Requirements
The University of Illinois System requires employees traveling internationally on system business to comply with the system and respective universities’ travel policies for registration and insurance enrollment. To ensure compliance and avoid non-reimbursement of travel expenses, employees must:
- Enroll in the applicable university-based travel and coverage website. Instructions, proxy enrollment options, and more information for Illinois employees can be found on the Safety Abroad website.
- Upload proof of enrollment directly to Chrome River. Travelers may utilize the confirmation of enrollment from the My Study Abroad portal (see example) or the insurance verification letter (see example) as proof of insurance enrollment.
