Dear colleagues,
Students, faculty, and staff at University of Illinois System universities, as well as alumni, will help determine who receives a unique new award for positively impacting humanity. You still have time to contribute as the nomination due date has been extended to April 18.
The Dr. Tai R. Shin and Mrs. You H. Shin Humanitarian Award honors individuals making an exemplary impact on humanity. Honorees:
- Receive a $5,000 honorarium plus travel expenses to interact with faculty, staff, and students at one of our universities.
- Choose a system department or program to receive $50,000 to help advance other humanitarian work.
I encourage you to nominate the world-changing humanitarians in your circles of influence and share this news release with others inside and outside the system who may do the same for the 2025 award.
Dr. Betsy Goulet, a three-time University of Illinois Springfield alumna, was selected as the 2024 Shin Humanitarian Award honoree. Goulet is a clinical assistant professor emerita at UIS who retired from the School of Public Management & Policy last year. The ripple effects of Goulet’s work and its real-world applications have had a monumental impact on improving the lives of others in many significant ways. Goulet’s work has significantly advanced child protection and welfare, creating impactful programs like the Child Advocacy Studies certification and the Child Protection Training Academy. Her efforts have led to the expansion of simulation training for professionals, improving their ability to safeguard at-risk children. Through her leadership and dedication, Goulet has also inspired future advancements in child advocacy and protection, demonstrating the profound impact one individual can have on the world.
Goulet chose the Alliance for Experiential Problem-Based Learning at UIS to receive the $50,000 gift. She received the award from U of I System President Tim Killeen and Tai Shin, a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign alumnus, at a special ceremony March 3 at UIS.
Thank you for helping make the Shin Humanitarian Award’s impact even more meaningful by submitting your online nominations by April 18.
Best,
Nicholas P. Jones
