Dear Colleagues,
We are writing to share that Reitumetse Obakeng Mabokela has announced that she will step down as associate chancellor and vice provost for global affairs and strategies, after serving 10 years in the role, effective September 30, 2025. We are grateful for the leadership she has provided the university.
Dr. Mabokela has successfully led Illinois International through a period of strategic and organizational repositioning, including the development and launch of the Vision 2030 Global Strategy, which provided a forward-looking framework for the university’s international engagement particularly in the Global South. Under this strategy, Illinois International promoted cross-unit collaborations and developed high-profile institutional relationships with global partners, including Kyushu University, National Taiwan University, and the University of Pretoria.
She oversaw innovative progress in Illinois International including the expansion of safety and risk management systems for international travel, as well as the introduction of digital orientation tools for outbound students.
Additionally, under Dr. Mabokela’s leadership, Illinois International underwent substantial internal reorganization, including the co-location of sub-units and the implementation of new operational structures. These changes have fostered greater cohesion, efficiency, and mission alignment.
Externally, Dr. Mabokela’s strength in representing the university has been instrumental in elevating Illinois’ global profile.
Information will be forthcoming about the appointment of an interim.
Please join us in thanking Dr. Mabokela for her years of service as associate chancellor and vice provost.
Sincerely,
Charles L. Isbell, Jr.
Chancellor
