Dear Colleagues,
We are on track to have one of our biggest first-year classes in university history. Despite a smaller target for the first-year class and a lower number of students admitted, students continue to accept our offer of admission at unprecedented rates. We are thrilled that so many new students see the value in an Illinois education, and we look forward to welcoming them to our university.
Last summer, we experienced a similar scenario that resulted in a number of unexpected challenges for our staff, new students and their families. This summer, Admissions and University Housing are partnering to prepare for the incoming class and proactively address some of the issues that arose last fall. Details are below, so you can share with your teams and answer questions.
University Housing updates
- University Housing has limited the number of spaces for upper-class students to ensure there is space for every new student in University Housing or Private Certified Housing.
- University Housing has worked with partners in Private Certified Housing to expand the overall capacity for first-year students.
- First-year students who met the housing priority deadline of May 8 have been given a time ticket to select housing based on a lottery system, the same process as previous years. These tickets range from Wednesday, May 21, to Friday, May 23.
- We know every student wants to receive their top-ranked housing option, but that will not be possible. We guarantee a space for first-year students required to live on campus, but we cannot guarantee location or roommate preferences.
- Every new student will have an official housing assignment on or before Aug. 6. We are going to do our best to alert students before that date, but we want to be realistic with expectations.
- We have been proactively communicating with students and families, so they know what to expect. University Housing will continue to keep students and families informed.
We appreciate your partnership, collaboration, innovation and dedication to serving students. Thank you for your ongoing commitment to our mission.
Sincerely,
John Coleman
