I am writing to share an update related to the Office of the Provost that, while positive, may temporarily impact your unit's work and engagement with the office.
Effective August 1, 2025, the longstanding office name, the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs — or OVCAA — will change to the Office of the Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor (OPEVC). More commonly, the university will simply refer to the office as the Office of the Provost. This change does not impact the organizational structure, personnel, mission, or function of the office.
The Office of the Provost at Illinois oversees academic programs, policies and priorities; supports the recruitment and career advancement of faculty; and manages the university’s budget. We connect the deans, the Senate, the University System, and stakeholders across the university to collaborate in this important work. Our mission is to ensure the quality of our students’ educational experience and to sustain an encouraging and supportive environment for scholarly excellence.
We are proud of the work we accomplish together with you. We believe this meaningful adjustment provides the university community with a more recognizable, more commonly used name for our office and one that better aligns with the provost title — provost and executive vice chancellor for academic affairs.
What does this name change mean for units across the university?
In the course of you and your units’ regular workflow, you may now need to look for or adjust for the new office name. Please note new codebook names for the office:
